1. Apple developing AI search tool "World Knowledge Answers" for Siri
Apple's planning its own AI search engine to compete with OpenAI and Perplexity. The system called "World Knowledge Answers" will integrate into Siri, Safari browser, and Spotlight search next year. Apple reached a formal agreement with Google this week to test Gemini AI models in Siri on their Private Cloud Compute servers. They're testing multiple models including their own, OpenAI's, and Anthropic's with no final decision made. The upgraded Siri is delayed until spring 2026.

2. Mistral AI finalizing €2 billion funding at $14 billion valuation
French AI startup Mistral AI is closing a €2 billion investment round valuing the company at $14 billion. This makes the two-year-old OpenAI rival one of Europe's most valuable tech startups, up from €5.8 billion last June. The company develops open source language models and Le Chat chatbot for European audiences. European AI companies secured 55% more investment year-on-year in Q1 2025, with 12 European startups hitting unicorn status in the first half.

3. Anker announces Soundcore Work AI voice recorder with transcription
Anker's launching the Soundcore Work, a portable AI voice recorder. The device features AI transcription and summarization tools with double-tap highlighting for important info. It includes 8GB storage, one-click recording, preset AI summaries for different scenarios, and comes with a lavalier microphone. Expected to retail for $99.99 in the US with launch date still unconfirmed. Available in black and white/silver colorways.

4. Android adds AI-powered writing tools to Gboard with on-device processing
Google's rolling out new AI features for Android including writing suggestions in Gboard. The tools can revise tone to be formal, expressive, or concise, plus fix spelling and grammar with one tap. All text processing happens on-device for privacy. Android also gets Emoji Kitchen updates for custom stickers, dual Bluetooth headphone pairing for shared listening, and redesigned Quick Share for instant file transfers. Users can broadcast audio to groups using QR codes for silent disco experiences.

5. PayPal and Venmo users get free Perplexity Pro and Comet browser access
PayPal partnered with Perplexity to offer US customers early access to the Comet AI browser and free 12-month Perplexity Pro subscriptions worth $200. The browser features integrated AI assistant, answer-focused search, and product comparisons. Available through PayPal's new subscription hub where users can manage recurring payments. US customers who link three subscriptions get $50 cashback. Offer valid through end of 2025, rolling out to international markets later this month.

6. Google announces Gemini for smart home devices launching October 1
Google confirmed Gemini will start replacing Google Assistant on Nest speakers and displays October 1. The AI handles complex natural language commands like "dim lights everywhere except bedroom" and coordinates multiple devices simultaneously. Features include Gemini Live for fluid conversations without repeating "Hey Google" and help with cooking, troubleshooting, and travel advice. Both free and paid versions will be available. Google's also expected to unveil new Nest devices including 2K cameras and doorbells.
