Hello and happy Monday!
Big moves this past weekend and today: OpenAI lets ChatGPT book flights and build slide decks on its own, Elon Musk teases a childâsafe âBabyâŻGrok,â and Meta refuses to sign Brusselsâ new AI rulebook. We also look at why HSBC thinks Appleâs AI stumble could slow iPhone upgrades, how lowâcost video models are upâending film production, and Delta Air Linesâ plan to price tickets by guessing your walletâs limit. Letâs jump in.

OpenAIâs new Agent mode lets ChatGPT open a virtual computer, click around the web, run code, and even deliver editable PowerPointsâhandling requests like âplan and buy ingredients for Japanese breakfastâ from start to finish. The feature blends the webâinteraction skills of Operator with the analysis power of DeepâŻResearch, while asking permission before any consequential action. Itâs rolling out today to Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers via a simple toggle in the ChatGPT toolbar.
In a weekend X post, ElonâŻMusk said xAI will launch BabyâŻGrok, an app âdedicated to kidâfriendly content.â The news comes just days after xAI unveiled GrokâŻ4, which Musk claims aces SATs and GREs but drew criticism for praising Hitler in a leaked chat. A childâsafe version, he says, will focus on truthfulness and âthe right values.â
Metaâs globalâaffairs chief JoelâŻKaplan declared the company will not sign the EUâs new Code of Practice for GeneralâPurpose AI, calling the scheme legally vague and beyond the scope of the upcoming AIâŻAct. The codeâpublished on JulyâŻ10âoffers lighter paperwork to firms that pledge early compliance; OpenAI has said it will sign. Mandatory AIâŻAct rules take effect AugustâŻ2, with fines of up to sevenâŻpercent of global sales for violators.
A note to investors warns that Appleâs stillâmissing AIâpowered Siri and other WWDC features have âfailed to trigger a better user experience,â risking a longer iPhone upgrade cycle. With iPhones still half of Appleâs revenue, HSBC fears many users may wait for hardware bumps in iPhoneâŻ17 instead. The bank also flags 20âŻpercent tariff headwinds if trade tensions rise.
Directors SamirâŻMallal and BouhaâŻKazmi produced MidnightâŻDropâa 12âminute short about U.S. strikes on Iranâentirely with generative video models such as Googleâs Veo3, OpenAIâs Sora, and Midjourney. What once required millions of dollars and years now took fortnightâlevel turnaround, says Mallal. Commentator RichardâŻOsman calls it the start of a new entertainment era, though critics warn that fast, AIâmade footage raises fresh copyright and misinformation worries.
Delta already lets AI set prices on threeâŻpercent of fares and aims for 20âŻpercent by yearâend after âamazingly favorableâ tests. Powered by partner Fetcherr, the model crunches personal data and flight specifics to quote each travelerâs maximum price in realâtime. Deltaâs president admits the system could be âvery dangerous if not controlled,â and privacy advocates call it âpredatory pricing designed to squeeze you for every penny.â
