1. Gemini Beats ChatGPT to #1 on App Store
Google's Gemini just hit number one on the U.S. App Store, knocking ChatGPT down to second place. The surge comes from its new Nano Banana image editor model that launched in August. Downloads jumped 45% month-over-month to 12.6 million in September. The app generated $1.6 million on iOS in August alone, up 1,291% from January. Google says 23 million first-time users joined since Nano Banana launched, sharing over 500 million images.

2. OpenAI Unveils Stargate UK Infrastructure Project
OpenAI announced Stargate UK, partnering with NVIDIA and Nscale to build sovereign AI infrastructure for Britain. The project starts with 8,000 GPUs in Q1 2026, potentially scaling to 31,000 GPUs over time. Sites include Cobalt Park in the new North East AI Growth Zone. OpenAI will also launch the OpenAI Academy to help upskill 7.5 million UK workers by 2030. The initiative builds on July's government agreement and aims to add £400 billion to the UK economy.

3. Fiverr Lays Off 250 to Become "AI-First Company"
Fiverr is cutting 250 employees, about 30% of its staff, to transform into an AI-first company. CEO Micha Kaufman says the company is returning to startup mode with a leaner team using AI for greater productivity. Fiverr already integrated AI into customer support and fraud detection. The CEO previously advised workers to automate 100% of their work with AI while claiming they wouldn't be replaced. This follows similar moves by Duolingo and Workday earlier this year.

4. GitHub Launches MCP Registry for AI Agent Discovery
GitHub released the MCP Registry, a central hub for discovering Model Context Protocol servers that connect AI agents to development tools. The registry solves the problem of MCP servers scattered across random repos and community threads. Each server is backed by its GitHub repository with one-click installation in VS Code. Launch partners include Figma, Postman, HashiCorp, and Dynatrace. GitHub is working with Anthropic and the MCP Steering Committee to build an open-source registry for the ecosystem.

5. Indonesia's Sovereign Fund Targets AI and Data Centers
Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) is pivoting to digital infrastructure, targeting data centers and AI investments. The $10 billion fund partnered with Granite Asia to invest $1.2 billion in Indonesia's tech ecosystem. INA is developing hyperscale data center campuses including one in Batam with 28MW capacity. The government proposed a sovereign AI fund managed by Danantara Indonesia, targeting creation between 2027-2029. Indonesia aims to become a regional tech hub as neighboring countries secure billions in AI infrastructure investments.

6. China's SMIC Tests Homegrown AI Chip Equipment
China's SMIC is testing locally built deep-ultraviolet lithography machines from Shanghai startup Yuliangsheng to produce AI processors. The breakthrough could help China overcome U.S. export controls on chipmaking technology from companies like ASML. SMIC shares jumped 5% in Hong Kong on the news. Baidu and Alibaba are both testing their AI models on Chinese-made chips. Alibaba's T-Head chip unit just signed contracts to deploy processors at China Unicom's Sanjiangyuan data center.
