1. GPT-5 Launches Worldwide
OpenAI’s Summer Update makes GPT-5 available in ChatGPT, the API, and business tiers. The flagship model ups the context window to 400 K tokens, introduces a “minimal reasoning” toggle, and ships in three sizes (full, mini, nano). Pricing starts at $0.05 per 1M input tokens for nano and runs to $1.25 for the full model. OpenAI says GPT-5 is meaningfully safer, better at code, and strong on health answers. ChatGPT now bundles study mode, voice upgrades, and Gmail/Calendar connectors so the model feels like “a team of experts on call.”

2. Duolingo’s AI Pivot Boosts the Bottom Line
Backlash did not dent the bird. After going “AI-first” and replacing contractors, Duolingo just beat quarterly revenue estimates and watched its stock jump almost 30 percent. The company launched 148 new language courses with generative AI, helping daily active users grow 40 percent year-over-year. CEO Luis von Ahn told investors that dialing back edgy social posts restored sentiment and helped hit the low end of forecasted growth. Critics still roast the app on TikTok, but a projected $1 billion in 2025 revenue speaks louder.

3. Tesla Axes Dojo, Refocuses AI5 & AI6 Chips
Elon Musk confirmed Tesla will “streamline” its AI chip R&D, dissolving the Dojo supercomputer team cited in a Bloomberg report. All effort now goes to inference-class AI5 and AI6 chips, which Musk says will be “excellent for inference and at least pretty good for training.” The shake-up follows executive departures, thousands of layoffs, and a $16.5 billion Samsung deal to fabricate AI6 chips. Musk argues running two divergent designs no longer makes sense

4. DeepMind’s Perch Gets a Major Upgrade
DeepMind released an open-source update to Perch, its bioacoustics model. The new version doubles training data, now covers mammals, amphibians, and even reef noise, and adapts better to new environments. Perch can sift millions of hours of audio, spotting endangered Hawaiian honeycreepers up to 50 times faster than human analysts. The model and tools are free on Kaggle, empowering field biologists to build custom classifiers in under an hour.

5. Google Gives Students Free AI Pro and Three New Gemini Tricks
Google’s Gemini app now offers U.S., Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, and Brazilian students a free one-year AI Pro plan, adding 2 TB storage and premium model access. New features include Guided Learning for step-by-step concept breakdowns, automatic visuals woven into answers, and instant flashcard generation for exam prep. Gemini 2.5 Pro backs the experience, while NotebookLM and Veo 3 sweeten the bundle.

6. Truth Social Debuts AI Search Powered by Perplexity
Trump Media integrated Perplexity’s Sonar API into “Truth Search AI.” The feature delivers cited answers on the web version now, with mobile beta coming soon. Truth Social controls which outlets the engine can access; early tests showed Fox-linked sites dominate when users ask about politically charged topics. Perplexity says it has no visibility into the source filter. The launch follows Trump’s executive order targeting “biased AI” and coincides with federal approval for major AI vendors to sell to agencies.
